Papaw, Ma, and I hosted a picnic every Memorial Day to celebrate Papaw and some family members’ birthdays and act as a family reunion. Even though the picnic didn’t start until at least noon because we had to prepare the food and set up, Papaw always told his siblings to bring their families earlier and earlier. Probably as a prank on Ma who was inevitably running around like a headless chicken trying to get everything done. One year he decided to take the joke a bit further by asking every single family, individually, to bring a watermelon to the picnic. We had countless watermelons stacked in the kitchen, and Papaw was pleased as pie.
